Tice's Meadow and Tongham GP, Surrey (9 Viewers)

18 or so Great-crested Newts found on site last Monday. This is great news and adds extra protection to the reserve. 4 Wheatear over the weekend but migration now appears to be tailing off.

The past fortnight's news from Tice's Meadow is now up on the blog. A mega week on site with our 2nd ever Bearded Tits, Great White Egret and Ring Ouzel. The year's total is now 147 species, surpassing 2015's 144 species.

Thanks to all who report sightings and take photos.

The Tice's Meadow Bird Group have applied for £1,000 funding from the Aviva Community Fund to build a shelter on Horton's Mound.

To win this funding we need as many votes as possible.

So do you have a spare 5 minutes? Would you like to make a difference?

If the answer is yes, then please vote for the Tice's Meadow Bird Group's Shelter Appeal at:

https://community-fund.aviva.co.uk/vot…/project/view/16-1811

Remember, you get 10 votes to cast, we'd love all 10!

Thank you for your support.

A cracking 2 days with over 71 species seen by myself and Dave Baker over three visits. Highlights were a Yellowhammer over, a single Golden Plover in the workings, a male Peregrine on the islands and plenty of thrushes through the Bike field. A putative Water Pipit was seen but we were unable to confirm ID due to the mist and fog over the Bike Pool.

A good day yesterday with a Dark-bellied Brent Goose seen flying out of the workings as I walked along the stream path. Minutes later we had 2 flocks of Golden Plover totaling 60 birds (22 and 48) both joining together and flying North. A small flock of Siskin/Lesser Redpoll was present and Rich H and I had a single Chiffchaff feeding in Leaf litter.

The Brent Goose was the 4th for the site and the site's Tice's 151st bird species for the year.

A reasonable 51 species.

The Tice's Meadow Bird Group are delighted to announce that our popular and well-attended Spring BioBlitz is returning in 2017.

The BioBlitz will be held over the bank holiday weekend of Friday 28th April to Sunday 30th April.

Note: For those of you who bought one of our calendars, this is a week earlier than shown on the calendar.

Activities currently planned for the weekend include guided bird walks, moth trapping, guided bat walks and a weekend-long bird ringing demonstration (run by Roger Dickey).

Please keep an eye out for further announcements, including which other partner organisations will be attending this year.

Over 90 members of the public enjoyed last year's BioBlitz, with 86 species of bird recorded, and one well known birder called it "The highlight of the surrey birding year". We hope to see you all at the 2017 event.

A great weekend which culminated in a walk with Surrey Bird Club. Highlights included 3 Kingfishers together in the stream, a Green Sandpiper, 2 Water Rails, a couple of Little Egrets and best of all 2 seperate Woodcocks flushed at different stretches of the stream. The strean appears to be the place to be with birds there now due to the frozen nature of the rest of the reserve.

The Tice's Meadow 2016 Annual Report can now be downloaded for free from this link:

If you would like to buy a glossy, full colour, A4 hardcopy of the report for £15, please email us: [email protected]

All funds raised from the sale of our annual report are channelled back into projects on the nature reserve.

A massive thank you to everyone who has contributed to the report this year, especially the photographers and everyone who makes the effort to record and report their sightings.
