Cinclodes albiventris

Identification

15–19 cm (6-7½ in)

• Dull brown back
• Tan belly
• White throat finely barred with brown
• Whitish or tan wing-stripes visible in flight
• Whitish-buff stripe over the eye
• Short, almost straight and pointed bill

Distribution

South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina.

Taxonomy

Split from Buff-winged Cinclodes and Chestnut-winged Cinclodes^[2][3][4] (previously all included in Bar-winged Cinclodes).

Subspecies

There are 5 subspecies^[1]:

• C. a. albiventris:

• Andes from northern Peru to Bolivia, northern Chile and north-western Argentina

• C. a. tucumanus:

• North-western Argentina (Tucumán)

• C. a. rufus:

• Andes of north-western Argentina (Campo de Arenal in Catamarca)

• C. a. yzurietae:

• Andes of north-western Argentina (Sierra de Manchao in south-eastern Catamarca)

• C. a. riojanus:

• Andes of north-western Argentina (Sierra de Famatina in La Rioja)

Habitat

High-altitude shrubland, temperate grassland, and high-altitude grassland, near water.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet includes insects and other small invertebrates, as well as seeds.

Breeding

The nest is built in a burrow, or in a natural cavity in an earthen bank or rock pile. Both the male and female incubate the eggs and rear the nestlings.
