Hello,

back in August 2004 I made a trip to the British Columbia. I do have some pictures (With my first digital camera) of some animals that I would like to have them identify.

This squirrel is from Golden. Grey or american red squirrel?

And this whale is from Tofino in Vancouver Island. Grey or humpback?

Thanks in advance

I think your whale is gray, although It's hard for me to tell

Your squirrel is actually a Douglas's Squirrel (Tamiasciurus douglasii), which is very closely related to American Red

I agree with the grey.

Mysticete, I'm not doubting you for a minute, but I was just wondering what makes it a Douglas's Squirrel rather than a Red?

Orange belly and more of a brownish dull coat pattern. Based on looking at a map it also appears that Red doesn't occur in that area, but Douglas's does (the two are largely separate in distribution, but do hybridize in their contact zones)
