Lake Limestone Birding? (1 Viewer)

Hello guys! Looking to branch out in my area to some new birding sites. I curently live in Waco and have extensively visited most areas directly around town and the lake, as well as the nearby Tradinghouse. There are plenty of other regional reservoirs but its hard to tell where you can gain access, as many of the parks shown on the map don't exist, and many parks are not shown on the map or are non-day use, etc.

I found some recent species sightings on eBird for Lake Limestone and thought I would check it out, but I am not sure where the lake can be legally and easily accessed......is anyone familiar with this place? It looks like its not Army Corps, but Brazos River Authority, but all I can really find are a few public boat launches and I am not sure if there is any land around the lake that is public.

Thanks!

Not been there, but after a few minutes of research I found these sites:

There is definitely public access - it is a fisherman's lake. I doubt they have a bird list of any type. Found a site talking about nesting Bald Eagles at that lake, maybe something to look for!

Goodluck! Will be looking for your list of birds on eBird!!

Thanks for looking around. I have most of this info already except for the cool bald eagle link.

I was hoping maybe someone who had been there would chime in with some info on what the property around the launches consists of. On Army Corps sites in Texas there are pretty extensive parks but I have no clue how the launches work on these non-corps lakes. Im not much of a stand in one spot guy, and if all it is are 10 picnic tables, parking lot, and ramp without any land to hike around on I didnt really want to drive the hour out that way.

But be that as it may, I am giving it a go in the morning, got a new spotting scope to test out! I am guessing that the mention of a "park 3" in the guys birding log eludes to multiple parks around the area? and Ill drive until I find em I guess.

Ill update in here with whatever I find, and eBird as well. Hoping for some goodies, we shall see.

Niels, you are right and I actually had offered to help create some pages. Helen was kind enough to give me directions on how to do it, but I have been so busy between work & school that I have yet to do it. However, my last final is on Dec 13, so I will start working on trying to create some pages for the state parks and other areas I have been to. I have started trying to remember to take photos at each area I visit.

Can anyone add pages in Opus? I havent looked at how to do it yet, but if its open for anyone to help, than I will help out as well.

I did make it to Lake Limestone this morning despite the poor weather. The lake is sadly low and not too many highlights. There was a flock of a couple hundred white pelicans and one lone horned grebe and two bald eagles among other things. The rest was pretty typical shoreline fare for this region.

Yes, anyone can add text / edit Opus, both add new pages and edit existing ones. The only thing we ask is that edits should contain your own text, not something you copy/paste from elsewhere.

Niels
