Anyone have any information about any upcoming birding events in Seattle, WA or the PNW? Haven't been out in a while and I'm ready to get out and see some birds!

You can Google contact details for the Seattle Audubon Society, which should lead to other events, birding locations and groups. Gray's Harbor, a huge inlet to the south, has run a small bird fair in spring; again if you Google 'birding Gray's Harbor', that may help. Some suburbs of Seattle are very leafy - mall car parks often hold a wide variety of birds.

There are several large bird preserves within easy driving distance; many of these are run very well indeed by bird-hunters - that may seem odd, but their actions have given many wetlands long-term protection. If you are going in late autumn, large congregations of Bald Eagles gather on some preserves.

You might try the same approach for Vancouver and BC - in fact there's one preserve south of Vancouver that if you miss the entrance, you end up at the US border because the end of the peninsula isn't in Canada!

If you have time, try Malheur reserve in SE Oregon in late spring - it's huge and you will mostly have it to yourself. You probably need about five days to do it justice. See http://www.fws.gov/malheur/. Eleven years ago, we stayed at the French Glen Hotel; see http://www.oregonstateparks.org/park_3.php. This is at the southeast corner of Malheur reserve, and the National Park visitor centre is at the NW end.
