I watched this whole process from beginning to end and I have to say that they probably could put us humans to shame longevity wise. 3:)

You've got that right KC! No Viagara needed for them! I think I read that they can stay connected for hours.

Okay girls, now calm down. You took this shot in the birthing room! He's just a good, protective Dad. Remember, she's ovipositing here.. placing fertilized eggs into submerged vegetation. He's doing what's called "Contact Guarding," by not releasing her until the eggs are deposited, he insures no other male will hook up with her and refertilize "his" eggs. But hey, dream on, don't let me burst the bubble! Oh, by the way, really nice shot, these aren't easy or often to get, and so close up, at least not where I cruise. -Steve

Gee whiz Steve, can't us girls dream a little :) Thanks though. My clothes needed to be in the biz bag after that outing.

Just to be pedantic--as I am afraid I tend to be--dragonflies are not long-lived! They don't normally live for more than five years from egg to imago. Longevity is not quite the same thing as sexual prowess. But they've certainly been around for a lot longer than 'us humans'.o:)
