Spring is in full swing now in Hungary too with White Storks, Barn Swallows and House Martins returning from their wintering grounds.
Raptors are also on the move, the first Lesser Spotted Eagles are back and Pallid Harriers started to appear. Eastern Imperial and White-tailed Eagle are already incubating their eggs.
The usual Lesser White-fronted Goose flock is back to the Hortobagy as they left their wintering site in Greece heading to Scandinavia. A few Red-breasted Geese are still around.
Rarities include a Great Northern Diver on Lake Balaton, a White Pelican in the east of Hungary. The discovery of a pair of Pygmy Owls caused much excitement among twitchers in the first week of March. Now the owls are silent, the female is probably incubating.
Woodpeckers on the other hand are very loud and conspicuous. This is the best time to observe the more elusive White-backed, Grey-headed and Black Woodpeckers in Hungary or in neighbouring Slovakia.
