Cassin's Sparrow
Mega-rarity found 17 March by Ellen Plane and Alison Su. Very skulky, best located by its almost constant singing. Not the full-throated song with skylarking, but more of a variable whisper song given while the bird was hidden deep in the Scotch Broom. The barring on the rump and tail and flank streaking eliminate Botteri's Sparrow and Bachman's Sparrow neither of which have been recorded in California. First Alameda County record and first March record for California. All previous records have been April-December and none January-March. Formerly included in the genus "Aimophila" but moved to Peucaea (pronounced pyou-SEE-ah) in 2010.
