Greater Roadrunner
A calm pose with tail slightly cocked and crest flattened. This iconic ground cuckoo of the arid American Southwest paused for a photo from the window of our car. The colored eye markings are bare skin known as the postorbital apterium. It is mostly blue in females as seen here. Males also show red or orange.
