My next-best BOWA series this winter - digest (Bombycilla garrulus)

Taking a walk down to the coffee shop I noticed this waxwing perched in some shrubs in a garden. Turned out s/he was foraging snow berries, which are definitely not the waxwings' favorite. They generally go for juicy red ones, not these mealy white ones. But with all the red berries gone (eaten), I guess beggars can't be choosers. Or rather, they're down to two choices: eat what's here that might have some nutritional value, or fly elsewhere. Most of the waxwings had chosen the latter by that time, but I guess there are always a few that opt for the former - eat what's available to get through the coldest part of winter and save on the energy expenditure of flying out on what could be a wild goose chase for better fare.

love the angle, he looks very nice with its black chin displayed, top notch, many tfs!!

The Waxwing looks well-fed at any rate, Doc. A very fine portrait of it too.
At this time of year even rose-hips, which they reject in the autumn, get eaten.
