Characteristics
Medium-sized owl, measuring 34 to 42 cm (male) and 34 to 40 cm (female). The male weighs 335 to 553 grams and the female weighs 390 to 563 grams. The wing measures 228 to 294 millimeters and the tail measures 127 to 165 millimeters.
The upper parts are beige, brown and cinnamon with black streaks. On the head, the crown and nape are brown with stripes and spots. On the top of the head, over the eyes, they have prominent dark brown and black feathers that resemble ears in appearance. The lores and a stripe over each eye socket are white or off-white, with a distinct dark border. The facial disc is whitish, with a clearly visible black border. The flight and tail feathers are dark brown barred. The wings are short and the tail is long. On the underparts, the throat is white, the chest and belly are dirty white or beige, with wide black streaks. The subcaudal feathers are whitish with a fine dark barring. The underside of the wing is pale and there is a conspicuous dark spot on the carpus. The outer primary feathers show broad, dark, transverse brown bars. The hooked beak is short, narrow and dark gray, almost black. The eyes are dark brown. The tarsi and feet are feathered and the skin color of the feet is dark gray. Its claws are black.
Both sexes are similar, with the female being slightly larger than the male individuals.
The juvenile resembles the adults, with its color being slightly grayer and its facial disc is more fluted.
