Hi John

Long distance snap of todays visitors to the Moors. The Little Egret was also showing well as was the 'Moors Terror' who was sitting it out while it was raining http://stuartandrews183.fotopic.net/p63471009.html

Hi Stuart
That is pure evil (THE SPARROWHAWK ON YOUR SITE THAT IS) looks like its focussed on you.
nice shot of the wigeon I don't suppose they were grazing on the grassy banks by any chance.
Cheers John

According to Worcester Birding I was at Upton today! I wish

My sister and Dad were though! Sisters first visit, she was taking photos for her Art.

Fingers crossed the Slav relocates a few miles NW from one moor to another...

No John, just swimming around. They did fly off on one occasion but returned after a couple of circuits.

Cheers Brian,

It seems us Upton slacker dudes are all lagging behind both Grimley and Westwood - Disgraceful! It would be interesting to know how many species have been recorded at both those sites so far this year in total (rather than totals seen by individuals) - the UW tally is 89 (we reckon) - I guess you and Wayne have pretty much cleared up on everything seen so far though.

Don't reckon your leads will last long into the Spring!

Hi Dave,

Good question. I'll add them up over the weekend. My dilemma is whether to count the Glossy Ibis. This year I only saw it on the east side of the river but it would have been viewable from the patch proper, ie the west side.

If it had only ever been in a field off the reserve at Upton for example, but viewable from Upton, presumably you'd count it?

Yes, I'd have that on my Upton list! We also count anything on the Sailing Pool/Education Reserve as well, i.e. the whole SSSI, and anything seen from the SSSI. I guess for purists it ought to be on the reserve, but as long as we all stick to the same rules ...

Think I'll be off to Feckenham tomorrow.

Cheers

So with that theory I am putting slav grebe on my list cause I think I saw the transmitter masts at upton from feckenhamo:D

Thought I'd post a few photos that I took at Upton on Tuesday of the tree surgery that has been going on around the salwarpe.

There are signs up explaining whats happening and basically the bigger trees are being pollarded to prevent them getting too big and cracking the base and ruining the tree, by pollarding it prolongs the life of the tree.

91 so far for Grimley area. The missing stuff are all common, like Siskin, Tawny Owl, Treecreeper etc so will get them back..........

I made the mistake of going to the flashes first this morning. This allowed Phil Andrews to find the 'star birds' of the day on the Moors - 3 Red-crested Pochards (an UW 'tick' for me, having skillfully dipped on at least three previous birds). They comprised two drakes and a female and mainly frequented the south-west marsh.

Another highlight was the Bittern, which flew directly in front of the East hide and landed in the broad meadow reedbed. The Little Egret appeared from the broad meadow channel (which is now visible from East hide thanks to scrub clearance in this area - well done Gordon's team!). Other birds present on the Moors included 11 Snipes, 1 Oystercatcher, Sparrowhawk and Treecreeper.

A Peregrine was again present on the transmitter mast and three Shelducks and 12 Curlews were on the flashes. A Cetti's Warbler was singing from the Hen Pool. A female Kestrel was perched on wires bordering the A38 and several Buzzards were seen.

The RCP's put me on 77. Attached record shots:
