Pennington Flash (14 Viewers)

That sounds like the Bunting Hide referred to in the above threads. But then again the feeding station at Moore NR has a few tree stumps as well. However its not an unoriginal feature for most places though. If you can post a thread to the pictures I'm sure someone will recognise it

Finally got to Pennington Flash on Sunday. My son has moved to the area and we were over visiting. Had hoped to go to Martin Mere but the snow put paid to that so we went there instead, it is only 10 - 15 minutes from Walkden where he is living. Glad to have made it and I will be back. The Bunting hide is fantastic and the all round birding was good. We were there for about 90 minutes and did all the hides, so we still have to walk round the lake and go along the canal. Had 34 species including willow tit and oystercatcher but I dont think I have ever seen so many shovelers in one spot (From the Penge hide?) or bullfinches (Bunting Hide) Got my Lancashire list off to a good start and clocked off a lot of hard to see smaller stuff. Looking forward to a return in the summer, with all the warblers and hirundines.

1st time visited Pennington Flash yesterday:

Saw Goosanders, Teals, Lapwing, Shelducks, Gadwalls, Shovelers, Willow Tit, Grey Heron, Redshanks, Cormorants, Wigeon, Reed Buntings, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Goldfinch, Bullfinches, Pied Wagtail, Chaffinches, Greenfinches, as well as the usual Long Tailed Tits, Blue Tits, Great Tits, Blackbirds, Mute Swans, Canada Geese, Black Headed Gulls, Mallards, Tufted ducks, Robins, Dunnocks, Coots and Moorhens.

There doesn't seem to be much activity on the Manchester forum at the moment.....surely the Manchester birders must have something to report ! What's been seen at Pennington Flash , Wigan Flashes , Orrell Water Park ? Any unusual warblers about ( I love warblers...although they all look very similar to me) ? Any other unusual birds surfacing in the Manchester area ? We're desperate for gossip !

Paid a visit to Pennington Flash on Tuesday - nothing too unusual on the water . The Bunting Hide is always worth a look though and didn't disappoint with views of Willow Tits , Stock Doves ,adult and juvenile Bullfinches.

Hopefully visiting Pennington Flash tomorrow for the first time in the hope of seeing the Black Necked Grebe/s. However not knowing anything about the site I need some help about where to park and where the hides are situated (mainly Horrocks and Bunting).

Thanks Jonny Scragg

Try here for a site guide:

If the two juv BN Grebes aren't there try nearby Houghton Green Flash, been up to five there recently:

(park near Midhops Farm)

Hi Johnny , There's an official ( pay and display ) car park right by the visitor centre which overlooks the flash . If you get out of your car and look towards the water the visitor centre and most of the hides are to the right . There's only one hide on the other side of the flash so I wouldn't bother venturing around that side .

Had a great afternoon at Pennington today, my first visit to the site.

Horrock's Hide - 1st winter Little Gull showing very well, 2 Snipe, 30+ Great Crested Grebes (never seen so many), flock of tits/warblers including female Blackcap and 10+ Willow Warbler

Bunting Hide - 5 Bullfinch (family party), 2+ Willow Tit

Teal Hide - 8 Green Sandpipers making a racket with their high pitched calls,

Hi im planning to visit the site tomorrow for the red and black necked grebes. I know the site fairly well and was wondering where the birds have been showing from. I presume theyve been seen on the main flash ? thanks in advance.

A group from Deeside Naturalists Society is going on Saturday. The leader, who did a recce the other day, had several bullfinches on a feeder.
I'm hoping for Redpoll amongst others.
Does anyone have any birding info re Pennington at the moment?
Many thanks.

I'll be going there tomorrow for my first time - hopefully I'll spot the two black-necked grebes among many thousands of other critters

The BNG did not show today but we had excellent views of several Bullfinches. Also had a Willow Tit on the feeder and plenty of Blackcaps. Great views of a Green Sandpiper and several Goosanders, not Mergansers as I first wrote, also helped to make the day special.

Would think your Mergansers would be Goosanders, a couple of females were around last time i visited a couple of weeks ago.

Cheers Peter.
