Olympus E-5 (1 Viewer)

A problem may be the size of the E-5 lens compared to the size of the Kowa eyepiece.

Maybe there's a way to adjust the sizes with adapters.

This may be one of the reasons that most folks use m4/3rds.

Hello all

here are two shots taken with E5 + Sigma 50-500mm using ISO 2000, at early after sunrise (one hour) at a heavy cloudy sky.

the first shot is as taken fro the camera, just a little crop and reducing the size for the web.

the second is treated with PSE7, as foloows

1- noise reduction with 100% preserve details on the bird only.

2- unsharp mask at 1 radius and 50 amount on the birds only.

3- noise reduction with 0 preserve details on everything but the bird.

4- some adjustment on the levels.

Your skill is amazing, especially using E-5 @ ISO 2000, which is widely publicized as having unacceptable noise levels above ISO 800.

Thank you.

Hi Duha. I didn't realise that you have an E-5 now. Lucky you! The noise levels in those shots at ISO 2000 look very good - better than I get with my E-30 at ISO 800.

Apart from the weight and size, how does the E-5 compare to your E-620? Is the focusing any quicker or more reliable and have you noticed any improvement in image quality?

Hello Ron

lately the E 620 was failing me repeatedly in many easy to get shot and its sharpness was much lower that i wanted, thought the Bigma needs some adjusments, but then i got the E5 as a birthday gift.

to make it short the first week was just getting to know things. i have noticed the following

1- the place of the exposure compensation is back to be near the shutter release button like my old E300 and i think like the E3, to me this is the most important button and there is easier to adjust when you are looking at the viewfinder.

2- the battery life is much longer then those small compact ones of the E 620 and EPL1.

3- focusing is really good but i need to get use to it more, feels much comfortable on the tripod than on the bean bag i use when shooting from the car window.

4- it has been very cloudy in the past days here and most of my shooting is at early morning, so i could not get with the iso at lower then 400, mostly at 640 and it seem to be working nicely with the IQ, was concerned about those iso 2000 images so i posted them to get what you think.

5- switching to video recording is a nightmare, you have to switch first to the live view then start recording and adjusting the focus while recording is not as easy as it is with the EPL1.

6- i have got ride of the Zuiko 70-300m otherwise it would have been interesting to see how it performs with it.

7- have taken some shots for my sis little baby using the built in flash and the 50mm macro lens and they seem to be nice but for me using it handheld is not comfortable, maybe in hands of man it will not feel bad.

in a few days i will be having a week vacation and more chance for using it at much better light, to get better IQ images.

hope that helps.

Very nice.

BTW---Somewhere I saw a discussion of why E-5 @ 800 ISO has less noise than @ ISO 640.

It has something to do with the electronics in the camera.

I haven't tested the theory, but thought it was interesting to try.

Anyone else see that talk?

Thanks for the reply Duha. I look forward to seeing how you get on with the E-5 when you have had more experience of it. Those two new shots are very good, especially the Desert Wheatear which is a cracker.

When I first got the E-30 it felt extremely big and heavy after the E-510. However, I soon got used to the weight and now the E-510 seems incredibly light, especially with the kit 40-150 lens on, rather than the 50-200 which I normally use.

Have fun with your new toy. :t:

thanks Ron so much.

as i said before many times Olympus makes some of the finest cameras in the world, but its limited line of long reach lenses has been a major drawback to them.

i still have nightmares about the day i lose the Bigma, then what will be the replacement. as now Sigma is not making any new 4/3 lenses.

Look after the Bigma, Duha. Recently 4/3 mount ones have been selling on Ebay for up to £900, which is more than many people paid for them new a couple of years ago. :eek!:
