John's Mammals 2013 (1 Viewer)

A bit of a catch up with my sightings over the last few weeks, we visited Cornwall and Scilly and caught up with some cracking Common dolphins, Minke whale, harbour porpoise from the Scillonian and a Scilly shrew on Tresco.

A mountain hare in the peak district

John has reported on some of the mammal trapping at Fowlmere, in addition we had a Pygmy shrew on the previous morning. I also caught up with the black squirrels in Letchworth.

Following up on some recent reports about Red necked wallabies in the Woburn / Whipsnade areas I spent some time searching and eventually bumped into one near Woburn.

The humpbacked whale was a welcome addition to the year list and nice to have one close for a change.

And some more small mammal trapping was productive with house, wood and yellow necked mice and a field vole.

A very productive few weeks.

New species for my land today - rare in LT, I certainly was not expecting this one - Black Rat!

Also got some nice video of Beavers in action - will process in next days.

polecat marked ferret for the second time in two weeks on the drive home last night (third time in 3 years and at least 2 animals as the first was DOR). From talking to others it'd appear we have a feral population of the things.

Some great seals at Donna nook well worth a visit at the moment.

Hawk Owling this weekend... any mammal tips for the route Calais - Zwolle and return? I thought we might try the Hoge Veluwe for Black Woodpecker, any mammals to look out for in particular?

I should have asked this yesterday - sorry!

Cheers

We had a few birds of which the pick were Two-barred Greenish Warbler, Smew and White-tailed Sea Eagle, but the only mammals all day were a bunch of bunnies.

Hope the head's better now!

Danny widerscope has posted on Facebook pan-species listers group that he hears pond bats are at "gravel pits near Cambridge". Also Mexican free tailed bats sometimes seen at heathrow. The latter sure fire stowaways. Anyone know anything about the former??

There were rumours of pond bats in Norfolk but I believe it was a case of mistaken identity and that they were actually Daubenton's. Cambridge would be rather handy!

Geoffroy's has been found twice in the UK in the last 12 months (Sussex & Bath area) and is believed to be a potential colonist as they're doing well on mainland Europe. Savi's pip also found last year in the Midlands somewhere.

Maybe I'm a bit thick but I'm not getting this, James?

Saturday I'm helping with a bat hibernation count so one more chance at Bechstein's and maybe even Alcathoe, though I'm not holding my breath.....

John

Ah, well, I thought I was posting a link about the Parti-coloured Bat on Shetland, but I had previously linked the Starling page to someone with an ID query, and it must have still been on my clpiboard, and I failed to proof read.

Cheers

I see Naturetrek are offering mammal watching trips to Ardnamurchan including spotlighting trips for Wildcats. I nearly spluttered tea over my laptop when I read who was leading the ‘night safari’ ... no other than the local estate manager(I won’t mention names) who has made it clear to others on here in the past what he thinks of spotlighting an endangered species! Perhaps a chunk of the £1200 Naturetrek charge per person for the trip has helped to change his mind about spotlighting for cats!

Talk about double standards, he got the police to threaten me with prosecution when I tried in 2010, either they can be spotlighted or not cannot have it for a select paying few!

Yeah, I nearly got caught out by his suggestion that he would help anyone coming up, luckily I detected a trace of insincerity in his e-mail questioning and told him totally the wrong dates to make sure he couldn't lie in wait.

Suspect everyone. Trust no-one. Unless they've been posting on here forever. Even then remember this is open source. Ask for advice but keep your plans under wraps.
