The annual 'whose got Swifts' thread (1 Viewer)

Matched up on audobons to me, but hey Im just a rookie. Sorry, it gets hard to tell from seeing +/- 100 species everyday here.
Victor, maybe your Vector space lies in Hilbert space, according to Werner Heisenberg's matrix mechanics formulation of quantum theory? That might not explain a a lot, but who's to argue with you? Never mind, welcome to the maelstrom that is Bird Forum...♾️♾️♾️

Saw my first couple at Ruislip Lido last Friday- the last day of April. Following day I went to Rainham Marshes & the air was alive with them- at least 80 birds. Sunday had 8 on my local patch & seen a handful since.

Had 3 singing Lesser Whitethroats on my patch last Sunday & had heard one 3 days previously as the tube doors opened at West Acton Station & could hear one in the bushes by the platform. Last Sunday at least 25 Common Whitethroats around my patch-so all seem to be in here. Also in were 2 singing Cuckoos, a singing Nightingale (last year was the first time I'd had this species here with 2 singing males, so good to get one returning) * a pair of Hobbies.

Does anybody know what the decline has been like for Common Swifts and the current trajectory. I know some new developments are putting in features I.e nesting bricks or roof tiles to help with the decline but not sure how widespread this is. Also does anybody know how easy it would be to fit something on those lines to an older house,

Swallows are very scarce here in Alnwick, Northumberland (I've seen just one!). Saw my first at Warkworth on 15th along the River Coquet and had good numbers in Boulmer village last Thursday 29th April

Swifts....a single bird on Thursday 29th but nothing since :cautious: No House Martins at the sports centre yet either.

My first ones yesterday6 May, at least 50 feeding desperately low in a river gorge in the pouring rain near Annecy, but I expect it will be a while before I see any over the house here at 1050m asl!

As for the Romans bringing Alexanders to Britain (MJB’s post 2) I bet they polluted the roadsides (as we continue to do with our vehicles) with all that chariot brake dust, plus ça change etc etc....

The roadsides in Roman Britain not only had Smyrnium olusatrum, but also Senecio squalidus (abb.) spread by the chariot wheels amid Thymus vulgaris, all in a band pattern, a fact immortalised in a famous Irving Berlin song...🙄🙄🙄

You'll have to explain this to those of us whose brain isn't set to the times crossword frequency?

Still no Swifts in my area.

I'm useless at crosswords but I think I've got it Andy (but only by trawling through the huge number of songs Berlin wrote 😮 ) I think MJB is referring to Alexander's Ragtime (thyme-geddit?) Band.
Anyway Andy, have you had any luck with Swift in the last hour, I see there's cricket going on at Trent Bridge so at least it's not raining with you?

The weather is pretty good Richard, sunny but still cold and Swiftless, for me anyway.

During the last 10 days I have seen groups between 30 and 50 (sometimes more) swifts daily in various locations in the Lower Rhine area.
Today while I was taking pictures of a Common Ringed Plover I was suddenly right within a small group of swifts. The wind had shifted a little and had blown insects in my direction, so the swifts followed and where circling around me. Sometimes on eyelevel and just one meter in front of me. Amazing experience!

I've seen a few a day since the first one (1st) and hundreds this morning over Wilstone Reservoir (Herts.) with Swallows, Sand Martins & House Martins.

My first Swift of the year today, flying along my street in Aberdeen. It was a bit of a surprise, as it was still pretty cold today. The date is fairly normal for first arrival here though.
