    Baltimore Oriole carving

Thanks sooo much everyone for the kind words! I've been requested to send photos of this piece to a pro baseball team as there might be some interest in a like piece. Guess which team! ;)

    Baltimore Oriole carving

Here's a piece I just completed. Carved from tupelo gum wood and painted with acrylics. Orange was fun to carve. The stick sticking out of the orange is from the branch below (suggesting that someone stuck the orange on the stick so the bird could eat it). Life size.

    Hummingbird and Grosbeak carvings

Thanks birdpotter! Actually I've done a Cardinal, Indigo Bunting, Goldfinch, Chickadee, Grosbeak and now the Hummingbird thus far. Am working on a Baltimore Oriole right now. But she sounds as if she's going back on her word now and telling me that she might be done. That has me a little upset...

    Ruby Throated Hummingbird carving

I posted this in the Wildlife area but thought you would all get a kick out of this. I named it "Beija-Flor" which is Portuguese and means 'flower kisser' or 'to kiss a flower'. The Portuguese explorers saw these when they landed in Brazil and gave them this name. All carved from tupelo gum...

    Hummingbird and Grosbeak carvings

Hi Everyone! Thought I would post a few of my recent carvings. Ruby Throated Hummingbird is named "Beija-Flor" and the name comes from Portuguese explorers landing in Brazill many moons ago and seeing these little critters. It means 'flower kisser' or 'to kiss a flower'. Carved from tupelo...

    Bill? Or beak.

What do you feel diffirentiates a bill from a beak? A Cardinal has a beak. Does a Hummingbird have a bill? A duck has a bill. Does a Blue Jay have a beak? Or do all song birds have bills and birds of prey have beaks? Inquiring minds want to know!!!

    Length of a Hummingbird?

I was wondering if when the length of a Hummingbird is listed if it's from the tip of their beak to the tip if their tail? Any help would be appreciated! THANKS!!

    So does anyone know?

When the length of a bird is given in descriptions of them is the beak included? So on a Hummingbird they say they're 3 - 3.5 inches long. Does this include the beak? Bird laid out flat...tail to the tip of the beak? Any info would be greatly appreciated!! THANKS!!

Hi I was wondering if anyone knew a site that had technical info on different species of birds. By technical I mean number of primary or seconday wing feathers, number of tail feathers, etc. Any help would be appreciated. THANKS!!

Please help identify and offer advice on injured bird

Are you sure it's injured? Many birds get frozen to whatever they're sitting on in an ice storm. I've seen pheasants stuck so bad that they rip most of their tail feathers and chest feathers out trying to get loose and get away! So just because it was in a bush doesn't mean it's injured. The...

    American Goldfinch carving

Here's the next piece in the commission I'm doing for a collector. American Goldfinch on a dead oak branch. Wanted the contrast between the dead branch and the live bird. My artistic weirdness I guess is showing!!! Both the bird and branch are carved from Tupelo gum wood. Painted with acrylics...

    SP-350 vs SP-500

Thanks for the info Norm! Some of those other cameras they suggest would be nice but the $3200 price tag's a little steep for this kid! But I can dream!! Thanks again.
