    North Sea Thread

Haven't been on this forum for some time, and have just discovered this fascinating thread. Thanks Gander. I'm onshore on NE Scottish coast (Easter Ross), so find the content of your posts really absorbing. Hope your onshore birding over the next few weeks is fruitful.

I've crossed to the other side

Thanks for the replies, folks. Yes, a really quality set of optics. I couldn't justify spending upwards of £1,500 on new alpha HD bins - and I think the diminishing returns factor plays a big part too. So, the SLC HD now being superseded, and therefore relatively cheap (sub £1,000...

I've crossed to the other side

Incredibly happy with my new SwarovskiSLC 8x42 HD binos. Went to my local optics store to get a pair of ex demo Ultravids as I have Trinovod BNs and was pointed to the HD SLCs. Wow was the reaction. So bright. So sharp. Great deal too. Plus the design and handling is excellent. So, although I...

Used Leica 8x32 BN or New Vortex Viper 8x32 HD

Yes, get the Leica - they retain value and are widely respected. What's more, they are superb bins - great build, optics, handling. Can't go wrong. A classic!

    comparison among the best 8 x 32

I recommend the Leica 8x32 BN the older 'built like a tank' design Trinovids. A modern classic in every way.

    The perfect pair of binoculars

Perfect bins... Has to be Leica Trinovid (original Trins) 8x32BN Why? Build quality Optics Handling Size and weight Price - non of your daft £1000-plus price tags All these factors score v high in my opinion, making this easily the best bino ever produced.

    Mexico Field Guide Reccommendation please

Thanks to all of you for some great advice. I like the Belize book idea and I have a NA field guide I'll take also. I love collecting field guides so any excuse to buy a few more including Howell and Webb ;-)

Re Portland Bill - Yes I agree - this is a super bookshop and very quirky. Some great titles to be found here.

    Mexico Field Guide Reccommendation please

Thanks Jack and Jim - some great info there. Trying to find the Peterson guide on UK amazon site to no avail. I may just go for it and get the Howell and Webb, but I do love the Peterson guide feel.

Which classic bird book can you recommend?

My shortlist... JA Baker The Peregrine A wonderful account of a man's fascination and relationship with the beautiful falcon. As for field guide - I collect copies of Petersen's Field Guide to Birds of Britain and Europe. Editions date back to the late fifties. It's the book my father had when...

    Mexico Field Guide Reccommendation please

Off to the Yucatan soon and wondered what you'd take regarding a decent mobile field guide. Collins one looks the best under £20 from what I can see. Thanks

    Santa's Leica

Wouldn't you feel a little naff turning up at a group bird watch with red Leicas around your neck? Ornithological bling! No thanks. Perhaps good for Beagle II spotting on Mars... Now's there's a niche market the Germans could exploit.

    Trinovid 8x32

Congratulations on your purchase. A wise choice and probably one investment you'll look back on in years to come and have no regrets - unlike that of a home or even a wife! Joke. The 8x32BN in my opinion is a modern classic and, as expatiated in a thread I posted here some months back...
