Optical differences on Ultravid HDs and Ultravid BLs?

Hi Douglas, As a 10x42 U/Vid (non HD) user for the last eight years I believe it is excellent value for money and the HD version not worth the upgrade. I cannot fault the unit and stand by the comments I made four years ago in the following thread...

Does anybody else use 10x70's for birding?

Hi Horukuru, No I don't normally take a tripod. I do take a carbon fiber monopod with a slik ball head when i set out to watch raptors for a while, otherwise i just take the binos themselves.

Does anybody else use 10x70's for birding?

Thanks Steve. I wasn't serious about the wierdo comment, it was tongue in cheek. You are right about being easy to hold. With these I can follow raptors quite easily, less shake and hardly any CA. They are a good exercise tool, keeping those arms taught trim and terrific.

Does anybody else use 10x70's for birding?

I had a feeling there would have been others. :-). Andrew, Rohn and the rest of you thanks for your input. I don't feel like a lepper/weirdo as strongly as before....

Does anybody else use 10x70's for birding?

That may be so but i notice a difference, specially in shadows, be it sunny or overcast. I use them because I derive a benefit, so to me there is some advantage. 25m not this model, it is actually more like 12m or so, but granted, unacceptable up close. I knew I was going to get smashed...

Does anybody else use 10x70's for birding?

I purchased a Nikon 10x70 IF SP WF last year, the one that weighs 2.1 kg, not the 1.9 kg version. I have taken it out birding many times and despite the obvious problems of weight and IF, i actually don't mind it as birding binocular. Depends on what I am doing, I know alternate between the...

How practical are the alpha 10X50s for general birding?

I also agree with this combination. Easy quiet 6x30, 6x32 viewing and 10x42 on a carbonfibre monopod guided with a quality ball-head and you can't go wrong.

    Leica CRF 1200 or 1600

Hi RonE, Useful comment I completed overlooked - the amount of clear viewing through the rangefinder blocked by the led number display, the red spot/reticle (whatever its called), etc. I'm told that the Leica ones have smaller digital data, etc that would interfere with the view. Which one...

    Leica CRF 1200 or 1600

Thank you Surveyor and tpcollins for your input. I don't think that rangefinders are that popular in this forum but i've got my heart set on getting one soon with reasonable to good optics to compliment the binoculars and for sole use when orienteering. I think i'm going to look at the...

    Leica CRF 1200 or 1600

As some of you know I love my 10x42 ultravid which I use extensively on a monopod but I'm thinking of purchasing a 7x or low power rangefinder to complement my birding, instead of lugging around 2 binos. What does anyone think of this idea? Does anyone have experience using a rangefinder and...

    Work a monopod for ...

Hi Al, I have used a 15x bino on a monopod viewing raptors over the ridge many times as well as a 20x80 Steiner on both monopod and tripod. The monopod you must hold, the tripod you don't usually, but let me tell ya, the wind destroyed most of the view on the tripod I was using ( it wasn't a...

leica 10x42 BL or swarovski slc 10x42

The focuser is very much silky smooth on the HD model. I do not think you will find a BL that good. If you can live with that then the BL will not disappoint otherwise. My ideal binocular would be a BL with HD focuser and the CA-less quality of my Nikon 10x70 IF SP WP. Somehow, I don't think...

leica 10x42 BL or swarovski slc 10x42

using a 10x42 BL Hi Pimpelmees, Birdwatching, nature watching, stargazing etc, is what I have extensively employed my 10x42 BL to do for me throughout the last 3 years. Every night I am out observing, i have them around my neck. I tend to go on bush/nature/birdwatching walks at least 4...

    New Leica Silverline Range

Hi hgalbraith, I have a 10x42 BL that's had a swim in the beach and a bath in a river as well as countless rainy days outdoors. Leather is still fine and glued to the bino (although I believe the leather in my bino was most likely manufactured by a chemist in a lab than coming from an animal...
