Distribution
Northern Mexico to western Costa Rica as well as the Tres Marias Islands.
Accidental vagrant to Arizona and New Mexico with one record in each.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
This is a polytypic species, consisting of four subspecies[1]:
- A. r. graysoni:
- Tres Marías Islands (off western Mexico)
- A. r. diluta:
- Coastal north-western Mexico (Sinaloa and Nayarit)
- A. r. rutila:
- Western Mexico (Jalisco to Oaxaca)
- A. r. corallirostris:
- South-eastern Mexico (Chiapas) to western Costa Rica; Holbox Island, Isla Mujeres
Habitat
Secondary semi-humid broadleaf forest, ornamental plantings, and coffee plantations, dry forests. Lowlands ca. 750 m.
Behaviour
The diet includes nectar.
