Identification
Total length 35-40 cm (13½-15½ in). Female with smaller crest than male and no red throat-wattle.
Virtually unmistakable. Briefly, the female could be confused with a female Purple-throated Fruitcrow.
Distribution
Western Panama to Costa Rica (Cordilleras de Guancaste, Tilarán and Talamanca).
Status: Uncommon to rare. It is estimated that less than 10000 remain. It is currently considered vulnerable by BirdLife International.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Humid forest of foothills and highlands. Also in lowlands during non-breeding season.
Behaviour
Feeds mainly on fruits using most of its time at low to medium height in the forest.
