Identification
Black upperparts and tail, maroon head, throat, rump, white eyering, dark iris, dark grey bill.
Distribution
Ostrinus - Ivory Coast to Gabon, ne Zaire, Uganda and nw Zambia.
Taxonomy
This species is either monotypic[1] or has two subspecies ostrinus and maximus depending on authority[2].
Crimson Seedcracker and Lesser Seedcracker have in the past been included in this species.
Habitat
All forests, especially seasonally flooded forests.
Behaviour
Diet
The diet includes sedge seeds.
