Identification
21·5–25 cm (8½-10 in)
- Black head throat and mantle with much buff streaking
- Rest of body chestnut-brown
- Longish de-curved bill
- Long broad tail
Sexes similar.
Distribution
Central and South America:
Central America: Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama
South America: Colombia, Ecuador

- X. l. eximius:
- Pacific slope of south-western Costa Rica and adjacent western Panama
- X. l. alarum:
- Tropical northern Colombia (Sinú, Cauca and Magdalena valleys)
Habitat
Lowland, mangrove and secondary humid forests observed at heights around 823 m (2,700 ft) elevation.
Behaviour
Diet
Their main diet consists of arthropods, with the addition of vertebrates. They accompany army ant swarms.
