Identification
18 cm (7 in)
- Blackish head
- Greenish-olive wash over cheeks and forehead
- Olive-green mantle
Distribution
South-east Asia: Sumatra and Borneo.
Taxonomy
This species was formerly considered a part of genus Pycnonotus. More importantly, some experts consider it a likely morph or hybrid involving Black-headed Bulbul.
Subspecies
Clements recognizes these subspecies[1]:
- P. n. inexspectatus:
- P. n. nieuwenhuisii:
- Known from a 1901 specimen from north-eastern Borneo
Habitat
Very little is known. One bird in Sumatra was seen at at 700 m in low shrubbery on a river island.

Again little detail. Seen foraging with both Black and White Bulbul and Black-headed Bulbul
