Identification
Sexes similar, 26 cm
Upperside mostly rufous-brown with green nape, breast greyish with vent area buffy. Throat and face mostly white with a black stripe and reddish around eye, while front is buff.
Similar species
Purplish-backed Quail-Dove differs in colors of front and nape, and Violaceous Quail-Dove additionally differs by lacking the black stripe on the side of head. Chiriqui Quail-Dove has different color on breast.
Distribution
Central America: found in Costa Rica and western Panama.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Formerly placed in the genus Geotrygon
Habitat
Lower montane cloud forest at elevations above 1,200 m (3,900 ft) (to about 3,000 m).
Behaviour
Usually seen singly and on the ground, may also use undergrowth.
Voice
Its giving a high-pitched "cwa" sound with one second intervals that has been compared to a slow pygmy-owl.
