Identification
16–18 cm (6-7 in)
- Light buff lower forehead
- Red upper forehead and crown with blackish streaks
Distribution
South-east Asia: from southern Burma to Thailand, Indochina, Andamans, Sumatra, Java and Bali.
Taxonomy
Formerly considered conspecific with Fulvous-breasted Woodpecker.

Three subspecies recognized[1]:

Habitat
Open and secondary forests, urban woodlands, grassland, rice paddies and gardens.
Behaviour
Diet
They have a varied diet, consisting of many insects, including ants, large larvae, small scorpions, berries and fruit.
Vocalisation
Calls: a sharp repetetive chick or tsik.
Movements
A resident species.
