Identification
45cm. A small hornbill.
- Yellowish-white head and underparts
- Black ear-coverts and throat
- Dark brown to black bill with yellow stripes and tip, low casque
- Black wings and upperparts
- Large white to beige patch on black tail
- Flesh-pink bare skin around eye and on throat
Female similar to male but smaller and with blue bare skin around eye and on throat.
Juveniles are similar to adults but they have a smaller bill without stripes.
Distribution
Endemic to Mindoro in north-central Philippines
An endangered restricted-range species. Main threat is continued deforestation and fragmentation of its habitat.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Formerly considered conspecific with the other species of this genus on the Philippines.
Habitat
Primary evergreen forest, occurs in lowlands, rarely up to 1000m.
Behaviour
Feeds on fruits, probably also on insects.
Usually observed in pairs, sometimes in flocks of up to 20 birds.
Female in breeding condition found in May. No other information about breeding.
A sedentary and territorial species.
