Genus: Penelopides
Description
Six species of small Hornbills, from the Philippines.
Females are all black (or dark) except in one species. They also share a plate-like structure at the base of the mandibles, ridged with transvere bars.
The Mindoro Hornbill and the Visayan Hornbill are endangered.
Taxonomy
Penelopides is a genus in the family Bucerotidae.
All species of this genus on the Philippines were formerly considered to be conspecific and were lumped under the name Tarictic Hornbill. Sulawesi Hornbill used to be included in this genus.
