Identification
17 cm.
- Dark steel-blue plumage, wings and tail blacker
- Tail slightly forked, sometimes with indistinct white patch on sides
Females are duller and grey above with a steel-blue band across mid-back. Also paler and more uniform underparts.
Juveniles resemble females.
Similar species
Very similar to Purple Martin but has longer tail.
Distribution
Coastal Peru (Piura south to Ica), rarely to northern Chile (Arica)
Uncommon in its small range. A poorly known species.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Split from Southern Martin and sometimes considerd conspecific with Galapagos Martin.
Habitat
Found in open and semi-open areas, coastal cliffs, woodland, grassland, farmland and human habitations.
Occurs mainly along the coast but sometimes up to 1800 m.
Behaviour
Glides often, frequently slow flying.
Diet
No details known, probably similar to other Martins.
Breeding
Not much known. The nest is in a hole in a cliff, tree or building.
Movements
Some post-breeding movements possible, numbers in southern Peru increase from January to April.
