Central and South America
Central America: Costa Rica, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago
South America: Colombia and Venezuela
Taxonomy
Was formerly placed in genus Thryothorus with all other species of the genus Pheugopedius.
Subspecies
Seven subspecies are recognized[1]:
- P. r. hyperythrus:
- Pacific slope of south-western Costa Rica to eastern Panama (Chiriqui to Panama)
- P. r. laetus:
- Northern Colombia (Santa Marta Mountains)
- P. r. hypospodius:
- Eastern Andes of Colombia and extreme western Venezuela (T chira)
- P. r. interior
- Colombia (valley of R¡o Lebrija in Santander)
- P. r. intensus:
- Western Venezuela (Zulia)
- P. r. rutilus:
- Mountains of northern Venezuela (Sucre and Monagua to Lara); winters to Trinidad
- P. r. tobagensis:
Habitat
Undergrowth and dense forest thickets.
Behaviour
Breeding
The nest is a large sphere with a side entrance formed from grass and leaves. It is hidden in tangled undergrowth. The clutch consists of 2-4 brown-blotched white eggs, which is incubated by the female. The young fledge after 16 days.
Diet
They forage in vegetation for insects and centipedes.
