Identification
45cm. A small hornbill with a ridged lower mandible.
Male
- Creamy-white head and underparts
- Black ear-coverts and throat
- Black wings and upperparts with metallic sheen
- Rufous uppertail-coverts
- Yellowish-brown tail with small black base and tip
- Horn-coloured bill and low casque, blackish-brown at base of upper mandible, lower mandible with brown ridges
- Bluish-white skin around eye and on throat
Female
- Smaller than male
- Black plumage
- Blue skin around eye and on throat
Distribution
Endemic to the east-central Philippines (Samar, Leyte, Calicoan and Bohol).
Still common in parts of its range. A restricted-range species.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Often considered conspecific with Mindanao Hornbill and formerly with all species of the genus on the Philippines.
Habitat
Moist lowland forests.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds on fruit, seeds, beetles and lizards. Usually seen in pairs or small flocks.
Breeding
Little known about breeding.
