22–23 cm (8¾-9 in)
The outer two tail feathers have white tips

  • Brown iris
  • Bill
  • Grey upper mandible
  • Yellow lower mandible
  • Yellowish-brown legs

Male

    • Brownish-grey head
  • Brown back
  • Greyish-white belly
  • Brownish-grey flanks

Female

  • Brown head
  • White throat with fine black streaks

Distribution

North East Siberia to Kuril Island and Japan; winters to South East Asia and Sumatra.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Low mountain woodlands and forests; farmland, parks and gardens.

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet consists of insects, spiders, fruits and seeds. They forage on the ground in leaf litter, and also in trees and bushes for berries.
