England, Oxfordshire

Overview

There are a number of good locations in this relatively small area, supporting 200 Red Kite pairs. The key ones being

1) Watlington Town itself, where the Kites basically inhabit gardens, parks, etc. They can be seen continuously at very low levels!

2) Watlington Hill (on road between Watlington and North End), where you can view the circling Kites, and regular Common Buzzard intruders.

3) Stokenchurch, where Kites are regularly seen cruising the skies.

4) Cowleaze Woods.

Sussex Bird Man's review

10 may 2006 I spent 4 hours touring this area. There were Kites everywhere. Particularly impressive is the view of them cruising - 2, 4, 6 8 or more - along the hillside near Watlington Hill. Another good location was the open area alongside the secondary school, at the end of Love Lane! All in all I saw circa 20 pairs during the period.

I recommend this anyone who sees the multitude of reports from Wales on this magnificent bird to this location. I can't imagine what Wales could offer that the Chilterns can't! Enjoy it!!!
