Central America: Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago
South America: Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina

Subspecies
There are 8 subspecies[1]:
- P. p. similis:
- P. p. cinereiventris :
- Northern Colombia (except for northern Chocó) east to Santa Marta region
- P. p. dorsalis:
- western and central Colombia (west slope of Andes in southern Nariño, and upper Cauca and Magdalena Valleys) and northwestern Ecuador (south to northern Pichincha)
- P. p. tristis:
- P. p. tenebrosus:
- P. p. nigriventris:
- P. p. polychopterus:
- Eastern Brazil (Piauí and Ceará to Alagoas and Bahia)
- P. p. spixii:
Habitat
Forest and forest border, second growth, plantations, mangroves, clearings, isolated trees in humid or dry localities.
