South America: Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 8 subspecies^[1]:

• P. p. similis:

• extreme southern Mexico (eastern Chiapas), Belize, and Caribbean slope of Guatemala south to Costa Rica and Panama (both slopes), and to extreme northwestern Colombia (northern Chocó)

• P. p. cinereiventris :

• Northern Colombia (except for northern Chocó) east to Santa Marta region

• P. p. dorsalis:

• western and central Colombia (west slope of Andes in southern Nariño, and upper Cauca and Magdalena Valleys) and northwestern Ecuador (south to northern Pichincha)

• P. p. tristis:

• North-eastern Colombia to Guianas, Trinidad and Tobago, and north-eastern Brazil (east to Maranhão and southeastern Pará)

• P. p. tenebrosus:

• Tropical south-eastern Colombia (Caquetá) south to eastern Ecuador and north Peru (north of the Amazon east to the Napo, also south of the Marañón east to the lower Huallaga)

• P. p. nigriventris:

• Tropical south-eastern Colombia (Meta) south through eastern Peru (east of the range of tenebrosus) to northern Bolivia, and to southern Venezuela, and western Brazil

• P. p. polychopterus:

• Eastern Brazil (Piauí and Ceará to Alagoas and Bahia)

• P. p. spixii:

• breeds south central and southern Brazil (Mato Grosso to Espírito Santo, south to Rio Grande do Sul) and possibly southern Bolivia, south to northern Argentina; partially migratory, wintering north to southeastern Peru and northern Bolivia

Habitat

Forest and forest border, second growth, plantations, mangroves, clearings, isolated trees in humid or dry localities.
