Identification
26.5cm.
- Sooty grey above
- Pale olive grey below
- Yellow lower belly
- Crown has prominent crest
- Pale grey throat
- Black wings with grey feather edges and a weak wing bar
- Black tail
- Sexes similar
Juvenile
- Browner above
- Rufous fringed wing feathers
Distribution
Costa Rica and western Panama.
Taxonomy
Monotypic.
Habitat
Wet mountain forests between 1250m and 2150m.
Behaviour
The female builds a broad, thick-walled saucer nest from moss and lichen, lined with plant fibres. 2 eggs are laid and are incubated by the female alone for 15-16 days.
The diet includes insects which are hawked aerially.
Vocalisation
Call: loud whip.
Song: repetitive fred-reek-fear.
