How many species of owl have you seen (1 Viewer)

Oh good...these are back. I now stand at 25 owls, with three new species from Ecuador this past summer, Mottled and both Pacific and Cloud-Forest Pygmy. STILL haven't ventured to Sax Zim bog, but I might have an opportunity this January (would be been more likely if I wasn't on Furlough). Furlough also nukes any plans for Europe this summer, so none of those owls either. Still don't have Long-eared Owl either!
Was able to go to Sax Zim Bog, however typical boreal birds were scarce due to warm weather. Dipped on Great Gray Owl, but I did get at least distant views of Northern Hawk-Owl, bringing me up to 26

Maybe passing through that way in early summer so I suppose there is another shot at Great Gray, but otherwise kind of hard to see any more new owls this year, unless finances improve enough to allow some trips to more distant locations.

I saw five owl species in the UK. (LEO, SEO, Tawny. Little, Barn) . Six if you count as wild the breeding Eagle owl in Bowland, UK, some years ago. Also a very very brief sighting of a probable Collared Scops Owl in Colombo, Sri Lanka in 2014
Total -= 5, 6, or 7.

Seen in the UK-

Tawny Owl
Little Owl
Long-eared Owl
Short-eared Owl
Barn Owl
Snowy Owl
Eurasian Scops Owl
Eurasian Eagle Owl

Abroad-

Great Horned Owl
Brown Fish Owl
Pharaoh Eagle Owl
Pallid Scops Owl
Pygmy Owl
Tengmalm’s Owl
Ural Owl
Hawk Owl
Great Grey Owl

Plus Slender-billed Barn Owl

According to the Bubo blocker list the most difficult to get on my list is Flammulated Owl, which is a surprise. I was lucky to see one. On my arrival in Cave Creek Canyon, Arizona I was told that a Flammulated's nest had just been found. A 200m walk up a dried river bed and a short wait on a log shared with 2 American birders and a bird appeared at the nest hole, hooted a few times then flew off. Job done.

Switching to IOC taxonomy, I started the Australia & New Zealand trip on 50 and added Australian Masked Owl, Morepok, Sooty Owl, Southern Boobook & Tasmanian Boobook taking me to 55 species.

The additional IOC species is (Eastern) Barn Owl which I had first seen in Thailand and I photographed in Australia.

Not as easy getting new owls and not as easy getting pics!!

All the best

Paul

My Thai Owl list is now fourteen species including eight new ones on my recent trip that took me to 63 Owl species in total:-
Spot-bellied Eagle Owl
Brown Wood Owl
Oriental Scops Owl
Oriental Bay Owl
Mountain Scops Owl
White-fronted Scops Owl
Buffy Fish Owl
Spotted Wood Owl

Probably the most obvious miss in Thailand now is Barred Eagle Owl.

All the best

Paul
