Help I.D. Bird of Prey I.D. in Southern California USA

Welcome to the bird forum and identification debates. Yep well, we have been round and round here at this thread and this bird, and its pretty much a given fact its a red tail, I mean there are a few things that point to ferruginous and maybe a couple that point to RLH, but there is...

Help I.D. Bird of Prey I.D. in Southern California USA

I too, enjoyed all the educated remarks as well. Some of these pictures that get sent in here are real tongue twisters and mind benders. I mean I have seen some real out of focus, you can barely tell it’s a bird photos here. This picture(s) had a lot of tell TAIL signs, the barring on the top...

Whats the difference between Song and Savannah Sparrows?

^ perfect. Central dot on song sparrows chest very visible (most of the time), yellow on savanna, size of savanna vs. song always helps me in the field. Where I am from the songs are always bigger, fatter and more vocal.

Help I.D. Bird of Prey I.D. in Southern California USA

dont get me wrong that leading edge patagial mark is very RTH looking. but just as a note. I have seen 11 ferruginous hawks in the last week where they aren’t even supposed to be. As a guide and schooled professional you know a lot of stuff goes out the window in terms of where and when and...

Help I.D. Bird of Prey I.D. in Southern California USA

With regards to the pics of the juv Ferrug. in this post ^ just a mental note this was a light juv, on this same day we saw a intermediate and a dark, there is a lot of color variation in these morphs. I highly suggest looking at the wheeler north American photograph guide. It really goes into...

Help I.D. Bird of Prey I.D. in Southern California USA

Just some things I noticed. No matter what this bird looks juv, so posting adult pics of a ferrug isn’t helping. Gape, mouth seems small for Ferrug. But kinda hard to see. Yet the bill extends down further than Rough or RTH as a ferrug would. Is that barring, on the top of the tail in the...

    Yes! Another Coopers Vs. Sharpie

good, tuff one. I'll never really feel confident about these types of things I mean right off the bat I said coops, but then looking closer, I can see where it gets confusing. i'd go coop but seee where it could look sharpish as well.

    Cooper's Hawk?

    Cooper's Hawk?

I messed up a few IDs here last fall, this fall will be no different, yet I am compelled to say coop at first sight, then the more in analyze it, the more I cant say. so yeah, thanks for all the pointers cuz the coop/sharp thing is my worst nightmare.

What kind of bird is this?

redtail for sure as stated in above posts, great pictures, also wondering if its a migrant (but I dont think a migrant hawk would stop on a highrise?), or a local bird or even offspring of the pale male, great stuff thanks for posting it.
