Global Warming, Michael Chrichton and State of Fear.

I wouldn't mess with Michael Chrichton, he knows his onions. He has been spot on so far with his warnings about the dangers of building psychopathical robot gun slingers ('Westworld') and cloning Dinosaurs ('Jurassic Park'). We've wisely heeded his advice on the robot and dinosaur issues, and...

Its well known in these parts that asylum-seekers are eating all the songbirds.

    Highlands & Ivory Gull

Bealach na Ba is correct, I saw 3+ Ptarmigan about 1/2 way up to the mast last Thursday and a flock of Snow Buntings by the road there on Friday....

What level of birdwatcher are you?

This poll is beneath me. But I'd be a 12 or 13 if it went that far.

Scientific papers, can they be trusted?

The healing powers of booze are often forgotten these days.

Scientific papers, can they be trusted?

Unfortunately my remedy is based largely on anecdotal evidence and I have little empirical data to back up my claims. The plan is to turn your body into a biological wasteground in which no virus can survive. An initial dose of 12 pints of premium strength lager, each attended with a whiskey...

    Highlands & Ivory Gull

As regards Capercaillie, these shouldn't be deliberately searched for. During the short daylight hours of winter, disturbing them may put them off feeding for hours with fatal results..... Best to come up in Spring and see them from the hide at Garten!.

I've reckon that you can kill colds with sufficient booze and fags.

    North Sea Fish

You can get a big bowl full of langoustines out west for about £12, which seems pretty good to me!. I don't see price as the issue here, I've introduced folk from down south to Loch Torridon 'Prawns' and they've been gob-smacked because they simply didn't realise that we had such things here!.

I seem to have got the wrong end of the stick then, apologies!. Seems he had previously been jailed in 2002, I may have been listening to something about this......or maybe I am just stupid!

It was because the guy claimed he couldn't pay the fines, otherwise he wouldn't have been locked up. Saw the story on regional news.

    Gamekeepers

I agree with the article that some common ground does need to be found between the two interests. Thought does need to be given to the concept of limited control to allow a limited number of Harriers to breed on grouse moors. The kneejerk reaction of us birders naturally is that this is a...

    Songbird Survival

I've got a pigeon fancier in my neighbourhood Any ideas on how to disuade his manky creatures from sitting on my roof and leaving a mess all over it, trashing my bird table and eating the grass seed when I try to patch my lawn?.

The project did show that at this site uncontrolled harriers and grouse shooting were incompatible. Which is unfortunate, to say the least......

    Gamekeepers

Didn't the RSPB rather shoot itself in the foot with Langholm? I seem to recall that the grouse numbers plumetted and they effectively handed the pro-raptor control lobby the information it needs for its arguments on a plate.....

    North Sea Fish

It is odd that as Island people, none of whom really live far from the sea we don't have much interest in seafood. In west scotland there are fantastic large langoustine caught in the bays, the majority of which are exported whilst we eat tiny tasteless imported frozen prawns.......
