    Today at the feeder

Wow, I'm guessing that's the same storm that hit us on Thursday. I'm sure the birds appreciate the full-feeders!

    Today at the feeder

I thought mine had gone also, but with the storm, they've reappeared in full force. Before then, it had been at least a week since I had seen them. They were still around today, until the sharp shinned hawk showed up. Not sure what time they'd usually leave my area (if at all) though, since...

    Sharp-shinned hawk!

Was on the phone about an hour ago when out of the corner of my eye I saw a larger bird land at my feeder. It was a sharp-shinned hawk! I have a sheppard's-style pole that I hang my bird feeder on and it was perched on top of the pole. I'm guessing it was going after some of the birds at my...

    Today at the feeder

Spring snow storm coming tomorrow. Birds are seemingly stocking up. Had 10 dark-eyed juncos, two mourning doves, a couple of tufted titmouse, the usual plethora of chickadees, and a new one for me, a red-breasted nuthatch. Very excited about the latter.

    Eastern Phoebe?

Cool. Yes, I was reading they like water. There are a couple of bogs not too far away, one with a nice sized stream running through it. No water in the immediate vicinity though, but plenty of insects to eat (which are starting to emerge with spring). We'll see if the little guy sticks around.

    Perils of Birding

Great shot of the cottonmouth. I grew up in Florida and saw them there often (same with gators). I love how cottomouths swim with their heads above water. Really cool to watch.

    Eastern Phoebe?

There has to be some sort of bizzarro mind connection between me and this bird. Just as I was reading your post, I was thinking I better double check. At that moment, he came in again and landed on the branch. Lower mandible was all black (Pewee is orange-ish, according to my guide book) and...

    Eastern Phoebe?

Well, how about that? A few minutes after my post, the bird landed on a branch just a dozen feet from my window and stayed there long enough for me to have a very good look at it. Eastern phoebe, no doubt about it now!

    Eastern Phoebe?

First off, I'm very new to birding. But I could swear there's an Eastern Phoebe hanging out in my backyard! I'm in southern Maine, and they're supposed to summer here, but it's still early. However, on the rare bird alert, somebody reported hearing one last week just one town over. I'm...

    Today at the feeder

Saw a male goldenfinch who looked to be over halfway molted into his yellow feathers, accompanied by a female. Yup, spring is here!

Just LOVE this time of year....

Yeah, it is cool. Over here in Maine, early spring migrants are already here, and others are starting to follow. It definitely makes birding that much more exciting when you know there's a good chance you'll see something new with each outing.

    Bird intelligence

Ha ha ha! I love how the bird is saying "put it in the basket" as he's walking up the ramp with the ball in its beak.

Bad pics of possible mink or fisher

I'd say a mink, but hard to tell. How big was it?

Nice! I just saw one yesterday as well. Were you near a water source?

    Mink Encounter

I went to the bog about a quarter of a mile into the woods behind my house this morning. Found a nice spot to sit down and wait for whatever birds might come by. I was sitting for not even ten minutes when a mink walked up to about a dozen feet away! He saw me then scattered. Really cool...

    Birds and Storms

Pretty cool how they know. This time yesterday they were at the feeder like mad. Now they're just hanging out lethargically at the fringe of the woods.

    Birds and Storms

I'm new to birding, which will probably explain my fascination of what is probably obvious to most of you. We had a snowstorm overnight, and I had wondered what bird activity would be like at the feeder before, during, and after. The snow started to fall and the winds picked up shortly after...
