    UK, Garden or Willow Warbler?

Singing for England, definitely no chiff-chaff sounds. I guessed Willow, friend thought Garden. Checked photo's and books but not sure. Apologies for photo quality, big crop! Denis.

    Yorkshire Birding

I am no bird expert by any means but enjoy photographing them. To me it looked just like the usual commons in my garden. I had heard the same "discussion" before so opted for common. No decent shots with other birds but does this help?. It was taken right outside the visitor centre in the nature...

    Yorkshire Birding

A couple of guys at Fairburn Ings were arguing over this one on Tuesday but they only agreed to disagree. Personally I only noted it as a Common. Then I saw this thread............ Denis.

    Stealth Gear

Stealth gear is very good quality and is very warm to wear. As others have said though, a bit too warm in summer! A word of advice though, avoid the Photographers Vest. Reputedly "designed by photographers, for photographers" is VERY hard to believe unless they were all film users. For digital...

    Suffolk Birding

Hi all. My wife and I have a weeks break staying in Dunwich forest starting 15th May. Aware of Minsmere and intend to do a couple of days there as a bittern is my biggest desire. Scoured Suffolk wildlife pages but if anyone could offer any tips of the immediate Dunwich, Dingle marshes...

    Website, help needed

Jos, the comments regarding your image size are obviously irrelevent here unless the whole thing is linked by incorrect coding. Millions of us run our web sites and galleries with photos MUCH bigger than yours without any problem whatsoever. Galleries such as pbase, photobucket, kodak etc do not...

Sony SAL-500F80 Telephoto 500mm f/8.0 Reflex Autofocus Lens for Sony Alpha & Minolta

It's down to personal preference but I would sugest you hire one if possible and try using it with different backgounds, especially if you often shoot near water. The bokeh produced by mirror lenses is not to everyones taste. I had the Minolta version, loved it at first but that wore off very...

    Which lens for bird photography?

The Tamron 200-500mm (300-750 effective on the Alpha 100) comes with a full Minolta/Sony mount permanantly fixed. No adapters are needed. There is no need for additional braces and it has a balance tripod mount on the lens. It's not light though so a tripod is highly recommended for best...

    Which lens for bird photography?

I would personally say no. It's hard enough grtting a fast enough shutter speed in England at f6.3, but Africa..............maybe better. However, I personally find the loss of quality too high a cost. The Kenko 300pro 1.4x does work and may still give A/F on good days in your part of the world...

    Which lens for bird photography?

Tammy 200-500 without a doubt. Superb value for money imho. Works best tripod mounted although I do regularly use it hand held both on my 7D and alpha 100. The manfrotto 393 gimble style head is ideal for this lens. You can see the 200-500 with the 393 HERE and almost all of my bird photos...

Leif, try QIQ, the one I use personally, for what I think is a decent deal. I have had no problems whatsoever with them since signing up a few years ago. I use the premium package for £20 per year and they charge around £4ish for a domain name. For this you get 10,000mb of web space and...

    Yorkshire Birding

I know it's nothing particularly major but for the last few weeks we have had a male lesser spotted woodpecker at Brayton Barff, near Selby. The regular birders tell me this is rare for the Barff and no-one can remember the last time one was spotted there. It is regularly seen but best early...

Nikon D40x/ Sony Alpha /Amateur Photographer

Hard one Nick. If all the lenses that are potentially available to you in the minolta fit are autofocus I would go Alpha. If that 600 is a minolta AND autofocus it would be worth a second mortgage. The Minolta 600 was a legend and classed as one of the best lenses made - ever! If not...

Bird Photos Taken With Sony Alpha A100

You can find a few on my gallery too Nick, http://www.denisg.co.uk/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=4 most if not all are using the Tamron 200-500 lens. Alpha 100 ones have a filename beginning with _DSCxxxx. Denis.

    Gimble Heads

Max, you will find my own opinions and tips on the 393 HERE. Regarding over the shoulder, personal confidence is high because I have done this for many years without problem. The one thing I always do though is to check the tripod mounting plate bolt. I think I mentioned this in another post...

    Gimble Heads

I have no complaint on either count Max. I tend to use mine with 2 lenses in particular but mainly with the Tammy 200-500. I do tend to find that used 'cradle style' seems to be a more stable way but there is little in it. The adjustment wheels on either side can be tightened for dampening...

    Gimble Heads

Chris, in VFM terms the 393 is a fine choice and works very well. I use one with my 7D and A100 with the Tammy 200-500 lens. Some detailed shots HERE with the A100 and Tammy mounted. Hope this helps. Denis.

    Router Problem

If it's any consolation Roy, I use a linksys BB modem/router and have exactly the same issue as yourself. Nothing hardware-wise at my end appears faulty and to be honest I have just learned to live with it. I tend to click the connection icon on the taskbar and choose 'disconnect' then go to...
