    vegas baby

tomorrow, bright and early, i will leave sunny florida for sunny vegas. I've been trying to find a local list server for the area to get some local opinion on where i should go (the Jay and the trasher are my targets). My transportation will be limited, but i haven't had luck with a list...

    A few Trinidad IDs.

Not even sure if it's possible, but could the first image be a zone-tailed hawk?

    Hummer - Arizona USA

Just throwing in my two cents (really it is just that) I am casting a vote for magnificent based on Sibley. It seems like the female BTH should show more white in the tail and the facial markings should be more prominent. Happy to be wrong here.

    Need help with Texas Terns

The large ones with the orange bills are royals. My guess (I'm doing this without my book at the moment) for the smaller black billed terns are foresters. Off hand I don't see Sandwhich but I could be overlooking them and my experience with common is minimal. Someone will remark on the smaller...

Mergansers and More, Central Ohio, March 2011

You've nailed the first two. Common merganser looks good too but I don't see that bird with any kind of regularity so it may be best to wait on someone else for those

Confirmation of a few IDs, Miami, FL.

ditto. the hawk is tougher, and my first thought was red-tailed but you're saying accipit.

ID this hawk? Southeast TN USA

maybe you could throw out some other details for us to work with alongside the pic. How was the bird acting? Was it soaring or actively flapping? Did you snap off any more shots?

Bid ID required please. San Antonio Texas. 3/3/2011

Isn't this black-crested? Tufted wouldn't show this much black in the crest

    towhee of some sort?

    Phoenix, Arizona, USA

I'm leaning toward blue-grey gnatcatcher for the first pic but it's hard to tell. The eye ring seems pretty obvious, although the shot is close and black-tailed show the eye ring as well, and the bill seems a touch stouter. Too bad there aren't other pics.

    Albatross/Gull?, Puget Sound, WA, USA

are there more pics you could post? The angle here seems weird. Or maybe it's not the angle. Bird looks a little odd to me. Maybe it was injured?

    Hummingbirds Houston Texas

of course, now i'm looking at the shots of the perched bird again and thinking otherwise. The tail may be longer than it appears. I wonder if there's anything to be said about the bill. Slightly down curved might suggest Allens.

    Hummingbirds Houston Texas

i think in both of your posts, you're looking at rufous hummers, although Allens are tough to rule out. I'm going on two things that i see: the broad fanned out tail feathers which would be more pin-like in Allens, and the fact that the tail doesn't extend that far past the wing tips on the...

    Kestrel - Hawk - Falcon?

I agree on Coopers but mainly due to size. Is there something else that eliminates Sharp-shinned?

    general bird iding questions

Jim, great points. One of the reasons i joined this site was the activity in the ID threads. I like trying to figure out what the birds are. My main goals are to nail them down to species, and if they're North American, figure out what the actual bird is. I'm sure it helps. I do own the...

    general bird iding questions

Jim, I've been visiting the ID threads a bunch doing just what you said: trying to classify birds into the species, and if it's something from North America I try to figure out what it is all together. The other plus is being able to ask questions and have someone who knows more say 'you're...

    general bird iding questions

I agree with this, and it's a habit these days. Walk out in the yard, try to get between 5 and 10 species. Also gets your mind right. Teaches your brain not to expect the impossible no matter how much it may want to

    general bird iding questions

My uncle first showed me the birding ropes years ago, and while he was a great teacher I've been anxious for other insights from a teacher's perspective. The main thing I was taught while in the field was this: start at the bird's beak and go from there. How do people teach new birders to...
