Bit wet at the Flashes this evening, search #uptonwarren on Twitter for images.
On the bird front a pair of Pintails was the highlight, although a late Swallow and a showy Barn Owl ran them close. One YLG in roost with c.750 large gulls and c.1k BHGs.

1 Jack and 29 Common Snipe at the Moors Pool this morning as per Rob Strong

Not often opportunity knocks so I thoroughly enjoyed a couple of hours in the East hide at the Moors across lunchtime. Birding rarely works out as we hope, but a free morning on a very wet day in October and still needing Jack Snipe for my year list....Moors it is.

Water levels were ok to access the hide in walking boots when I arrived, but a significant pool was developing around the hide by the time I left. The water over-topped my boots repeatedly for the first 50 yards from the hide. 20+ Mallard on the field behind the hide, enjoying the new pools.

The Common Snipe were a very enjoyable watch, all on the edges of the vegetation line directly opposite the hide. A couple of scans across gave me a total of 29 both times, but the birds were moving constantly. I wouldn't be surprised to find there were another 20 or more present.

I was on the verge of packing up with no Jack Snipe, but one last scan and suddenly I'm watching a smaller bird with that facial pattern, dark crown stripe, bouncing as it feeds...bingo.

8 Curlew feeding in the field adjacent to the Moors car park as I left.

A very good late date for Swallow although there have been four November records - 1st on three occasions (1992, 2002 and 2012) with a remarkable sighting on 20th in 2006.

Great stats Phil! Any chance of one for waders? :t::t::t:
Or have I missed it?

Disappointingly small roost last night at Flashes, less than 1,000 gulls in total. Around 600 BHG & c,.150-200 HG & LBBG plus 1 ad. YLG. Two Barn Owls noted, 12 Curlews rooted and one Green Sandpiper & a few Snipe seen. Starling roost numbers lower too, only c. 200. Waterfowl counts: Teal 46; Mallard 72; Shoveler 44; Gadwall 23; Coot 55; Moorhen 13. Six GCGs on Sailing Pool.

From the Flashes this morning Phil W reports:

Teal 34, Shoveler 28, Gadwall 13, Lapwing 35, Stonechat 1 (male) and a couple of Meadow Pipits
