Birds of Western Ecuador - A Photographic Guide (1 Viewer)

Sample pages of Birds of Western Ecuador

I received my copy of this book last week and am very happy with the photographs. For so many species covered with a restricted amount of text, the material does good but not great job describing the more difficult family groups. Understandably, minimal effort is given to describing the tapaculos. I've attached five sample pages here.

Just ordered this book. Looks much more comprehensive than many regional photographic guides which are often quite limited in species coverage.
Amazon allows a decent 'Look Inside' at this link:

Presumably the guide doesn't cover species which range only into eastern Ecuador, but the range maps of the species depicted do extend (where applicable) into the east slope & Amazonia (at least on the sample pages). That's good to know. Thanks for those samples.

Apparently still no date on the release of the Restall Ecuador guide.

I agree about the photos. But I'm disappointed about the weight of this book. Of course, it also has the well known problems of any photo based bird guide. Thus, as a FG it would be a "better than nothing" solution. But to actually take into the field, it is too cumbersome. The compact "Fieldbook..." by McMullan and Navarrete is definitely much more to the point. The two books weigh 1145 grams and 369 grams respectively. Thus, the photo guide is more than three times the weight of the Fieldbook.

Here are some comparative pictures and plates taken from the Fieldbook: first Tinamous that can be compared much more easily in the smaller book, thanks to the fine overview.

...........plates taken from the Fieldbook: first Tinamous......

Three more spreads from McMullen & Navarrete: some raptors, manakins and tityras etc., and hummingbirds. And all this not only for western Ecuador but for the whole country.
