Upton Warren (71 Viewers)

From the Moors Pool today James Kenny reports:

7 Greylag Geese, 5 Mute Swan, 34 Mallard, 13 Shoveler, 33 Teal, 42 Pochard (best count of the year), 6 Little Grebe, 2 Great Crested Grebe, 6 Cormorant, 5 Moorhen, 22 Coot, 210 Lapwing, 4 Snipe, 77 Black-headed Gull & Herring Gull
 
At the half way point of the month December's list has reached 79 species - this compares to an average of 82.8 with a maximum of 85 (2015) and a minimum of 82 (2014, 2016 and 2017).

Potential additions in the remainder of the month include (year ticks in bold):

Barnacle Goose, Pintail, Wigeon Woodcock, Common Gull, Yellow-legged Gull, Great Black-backed Gull (usually a Dave Jackson speciality), Tawny Owl, Feral Pigeon, Skylark, Stonechat, Chiffchaff, House Sparrow, Brambling, Yellowhammer
 
The following species assessed by the British Birds Rarities Committee have occurred in Worcestershire; with the number of national records up to the end of 1995 stated afterwards. Those which have occurred at Upton Warren are in bold:

Another species to add to the list is Ferruginous Duck-445, reinstated to the BBRC list in 2017 after an eleven-year spell at county level.

..............and Spotted Sandpiper-216 plus Aquatic Warbler-1399 which was has also been reinstated recently. Not forgetting Savi's Warbler-667, another reinstated species. Finally, Eastern Black Redstart-14.

Won't have EBR as it's only a sub species.

Do the above number of records include occurrences in years when assessed by county recorders?
 
Female Goosander today still at the Moors Pool then flew towards the Sailing Pool plus 43 Pochard and an argentatus-type Herring Gull sporting yellow legs as per Mike W and Andy P.

enjoyable afternoon with good birds and company, with lots of birds flying around they kept you on your toes.Many thanks to Mike W for pointing out the coal tit and siskins , The Moors was as busy as the flashes was as quiet.

Little Owl on the dilapidated barn at 0730, c450 Lapwing, 11 Curlew, 30 Teal, Cetti's Warbler calling.

MOORS POOL
Coal Tit, Jay and Treecreeper on and around feeders in North Moors
 
Today's work party at FLASHES

Well we were going to have one but rain stopped play...25 of the Tuesday Crew did however enjoy a breakfast at the SAILING centre Cafe. This a thank you for the great effort this season. See my twitter for party pic8-P

Birding on Reserve Today

A very wet day worsening all the time with a strong S/SE
The water levels are now rising..the Flashes is at the Spring level of 0.4.

Moors: (7.30 - 8.40am)
GCG. Little grebe 3. Cormorant 3. Mute swan 4. Canada geese 20. Shoveler 15+. Teal 23. Gadwall pr. Mallard 40. Shelduck. Tufted 20+. Pochard c28.
Coot only 15.
Snipe 22. Lapwing 140. Curlew 6.

FLASHES:(11am -2.40pm)
Teal 91 . Mallard 55. Shoveler 6.
Coot 3
Snipe 14. Curlew 7.
Thrushes c150. Grey wag.

SAILING POOL:
GCG 5. Goosander fem. Tufted 3. Coot 18-20. Cormorant 14.

Hi.As a newby birder to this forum I would just like to thank the volunteer workparty people for all their work this year.It really makes a difference to the enjoyment of this wonderful reserve and I hope to join them in the new year if they have any light duties to do.Graham

FOX Fencing Flashes - Holiday Working

Just been told by Nick that he is not working tomorrow Friday 21st December and won't be back till at earliest 27th December..I will update when I hear from Nick.
HAPPY CHRISTMAS to all Upton warren birders/togs...hopefully we will have a more bird enriched 2019 than this year. Which has had some highlights but drought and fox fencing failure was disappointing. B :) john
