two sets of pictures, the first two (taken in Vicenza) i suspect are house martins (although it could be some other type of swallow), the second two (taken in Pescasseroli, Abruzzo National Park) i reckon are crag martins

am i anywhere near the mark ? first set taken middle of august, second set second half of september

are you saying that there's a mixture of house martins and red-rumped swallows ? because if that's the case, my eye clearly is untrained to see the difference :-C

Yes, look at the left hand bird in #1. Clearly see a reddish throat patch, lighter nape sides and a buffish rump patch.

The photographs with yellow background show House Martins (the one with a brownish smudge on the throat, pale flecks on the forehead and white margins to tertiary coverts is clearly a Juv, not Red-rumped Swallow...), while on the other 2 photographs I see Crag Martins.

Ciao Igor, Italy

I would have put my money on the bottom left bird in pic 1 being a Rumper - longer wings and different shaped head - in addition to the rump and collar...

Laurie -

Brightened pic 1; that lower left bird certainly looks odd for a House Martin, but still think it is one (perhaps stained), as the head shows a sharp contrast below the eye between the black crown and pale throat; Red-rump doesn't have that contrast, with the eye obvious in the paler side of the head.

Ok - i am now in the HM club. I suppose the absence of adult Rumpers would be the obvious factor but how do we know if we are not there?
