Peregrine Falcon or Common Kestrel at Sabah, Borneo (1 Viewer)

I agree on Peregine falcon but it somehow looks different to my local birds. Is there a sub-species in Borneo? Very nice photos though. Eddy.

Great picture of a young Peregrine. Apparently it is only a migrant to Borneo and the race is peregrinator. I watched one hunting bats with Bat Hawks at Gomantong Caves in Sabah two months ago. It was an adult and the belly was noticeably darker than that of European birds.

It is a resident and a migrant. Resident birds, ernesti, are much darker on the underparts due to the dense barring, and do tend to breed on limestone cliff-faces, such as Gomantong (and the cliff opposite Borneo Rainforest Lodge).

Quite right, James. I must get some new specs; I didn't notice that Phillipps has two entries for Peregrine! (2nd ed p 96).
