hi all,
just wanted some ID help with a bat i saw at Amwell, east Herts on the 13th. It was quite big, didnt fly that quickly, had obvious ears and this was at dusk. It flew high over our heads, but i think i recall it descending closer to the water. Several people have mentioned Long-eared Bat, but just thought i'd post it on here for some expert opinions.

The obvious ears suggest long eared bat, whether its a brown or grey long eared I dont know! In general long eareds have a slow, fluttery flight. The fact that it went low over the water does throw up another possibility- Daubentons. Did it have an obvious white belly? If so that could be your bat. But of course long eareds will hunt over areas of water too. Hope this helps and hasnt confused things further!

Hi, thanks for replying. I didn't see a white belly, but there was little light so it might have had one. Didn't even know there were 2 types of Long-eared! :eek!:
Guess this could be an indication that I should start to learn my bats now haha.

I'd say it was probably a long-eared bat too. Another possibility is a greater horseshoe but it's probably too early in the year.
