Who was Mrs. Hartert? (1 Viewer)

Bjoern,
I have about as little Latin as you, but wouldn't the disappearance of the H and addition of -a at the end be a result of latinization?

Niels
Niels, could very well be the case, for the scientific name, but it doesn't explain that her name is claimed to have been Reinard (no h), does it? ;)

Mark, as permanent as the Son "Charles", whose original name was Karl. ;)
But he was born in Britain and ended up fighting in a British regiment, thus was presumably treated by the British administration as a Brit. If so, shouldn't "Charles" be expected to be the name under which he was declared at birth...?

And John Cassin's wife was Hannah, (née Wright), here or here.
First link:
About 1813 (September 15th)- Future wife Hannah Wright is born. (There are several possible dates for her birth. In 1888, at the time of her death she was listed as being 82 years old. That would make the birth year about 1806. Other sources list her birth year as several different years. Her grave marker is hard to read for the year but Sept 15. is easy to see)
The Key to Scientific Names
Hannah Cassin née Wright (1813-1888) wife of US ornithologist John Cassin (subsp. Tangara cyanicollis).

The Eponym Dictionary of Birds claims:
Blue-necked Tanager ssp. Tangara cyanicollis hannahiae Cassin, 1865
Mrs Hannah Cassin (c.1806–1888) née Wright was the wife (1837) of John Cassin, who described the tanager. Her birth year is uncertain – some sources give c.1813 – but she was said to be 82 when she died – her headstone reveals 15th September as the day, but the year is hard to decipher.

So what's the correct birth date may explored here?

This macabre record should settle this. This is the undertaker's record indicating birth Sept 15 1806. Some very disturbing extra details!

Regarding Claudine (Claudia) Hartert. I think there is a touch of sexism in the accounts. Claudia was a published scientist, an experienced ornithologist and an indispensible part of the Tring Museum team. Yes she was Ernst's wife but that was probably not why she was honoured by La Touche.
