Dyfi Osprey Project 2014 (1 Viewer)

The Dyfi Osprey Project will open to the public on Monday 31st March 2014. After a few weeks, the Observatory will be open, and this will allow views of the Osprey nest from just over 200m away, one of the closest observations of an Osprey nest in the UK.

Monty's 'infamous' ash tree came down in the winter storms, meaning that the camera on it broke, so the fundraising means that there is a new camera on a new larch tree that has been erected for the birds to use to perch/eat/mate.

There is hope that the Live Streaming will be ready for this evening. Due to circumstances outside of our control, it has not been possible to launch the Live Streaming this morning as originally planned. Apologies, you'll have to carry on waiting a little bit longer!

The Dyfi Live Streaming has gone LIVE for another season! There are some issues at the moment so if you cannot see it, just remain patient! Thank you.

Just a reminder that the Project is open on MONDAY 31st MARCH. The brand new observatory however isn't quite ready for Monday, but will be soon.

A couple of Ospreys have been seen flying over the Dyfi estuary in the last week, and with this warmer weather setting in again, there is a huge movement of Ospreys across France, with a lot of them heading for the UK. It is almost certain that Monty and Glesni are two of those; however, an Osprey was seen on the Teifi estuary this evening, which is just 45 miles SW of the Dyfi nest - will there be a bird there tomorrow... watch this space (and the webcam!)

First bird of the season

The first Osprey has landed on the nest this morning; however, it was not Monty or Glesni (Blue 24(10)). It was Blue 24, Glesni's cousin who was seen around the Dyfi last year.

Lets just hope that things are not quite as complicated as last year, that was a right old soap opera, made for great live streaming and chat, but had us very concerned too :eek!:

After last year Monty probably thought he had seen it all, drama, competition, fish catching to impress all potential mates etc, etc. So now we await the moment when he appears like the superstar he truly is, of course he's going to keep us all on tenterhooks in the meanwhile.

Weather is mild and the wind is no problem at present, with typical April weather on the horizon, so come on Monty...your stage is set and your public await!!!

The project opens today, and the birds are expected back very soon. Keep an eye on the webcam, or if you're local, pop down for the first visit of the season, and you may well see one of them return!

Thanks Daisy.

Some excitement today, with Blue 24 from yesterday returning to the nest. Shortly after, she was joined by another female, however this bird was unringed and looked like a new bird that has not been seen on the Dyfi nest before. This bird has now disappeared, but Blue 24 has stayed around the nest all day, and can be seen on the webcam now.

Blue 24 roosted on the nearby larch tree perch (former ash tree perch), just 20 feet away from the nest itself. She has been around this morning, even bringing in nesting material and rearranging sticks on the nest; however, she has not been seen for the last hour. She was last seen heading north - more than likely gone fishing. However, Blue 24 was seen last year in the Glaslyn valley and around Porthmadog, so has she gone up there for a visit? We'll wait and see.

DOP opening times - 10-6pm daily.

Osprey reported on Llyn Llangors (Brecknockshire) yesterday pm. Not too far away from the Dyfi as the Osprey flies!

Talking about flies the nest is absolutely buzzing with them on the live stream this afternoon, you can clearly hear the buzzing too!!!

Osprey reported on Llandegfedd Reservoir (Near Pontypool, Gwent) yesterday morning, this water is right on the northward migration route that takes in the Usk, Wye and Severn rivers and provides easy access (and fishing!) across to Mid Wales and the Dyfi.

The nest is being occupied and rearranged by Dai Dot and a potential female mate at present. Dai Dot has been seen around the Dyfi in previous years, problems could occur when the real tenants Monty & Glesni arrive back (and I really hope their both okay and do!!!) then there could be fireworks :eek!:

At present the weather is miserable on the Dyfi and Dai Dot is looking pretty forlorn standing on the nest, the live stream http://www.dyfiospreyproject.com/stream has been showing him looking skywards now and again...perhaps he's expecting some company ;)
