Hesychius (1 Viewer)

The Key; through a glass, darkly. As well as a good Greek lexicon and a good Latin dictionary, the natural history etymologist should also acquire, amongst many others: D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson, 1895 (and later eds.), A Glossary of Greek Birds; Filippo Capponi, 1979, Ornithologia Latina; W. Geoffrey Arnott, 2007, Birds in the Ancient World from A to Z; Kenneth F. Kitchell Jr., 2014, Animals in the Ancient World from A to Z. These titles contain numerous references to the classical and older authors.

Several names are mentioned in the Key with a reference to Hesychius.

I would like to know if there is a specific work by Hesychius where these names can be found.

Hesychius of Alexandria prepared a Lexicon (c.400AD). Various editions have since been issued (search Google), but I use the "simplest" edition by M. Schmidt (1867, Jena): "Hesychii Alexandrini Lexicon." However, much information on his work can be found in the relevant titles in #2 above.

Thanks James.

What would be the best way to refer to his work then? "Mentioned by Hesychius in his Lexicon" would be appropriate?

Hesychius' lexicon, although based on an earlier but lost lexicon, is his only surviving work, so just reference to Hesychius is more than enough.
